22nd Annual Mill Woods Canada Day Celebration
Another great Canada Day has come and gone in Mill Woods.
But it started out a little wet. The morning of July 1st began with a summer downpour. It wasn’t a warm downpour. No, it had a real coolness to it. The volunteers didn’t care. There was still work to be done. We had to finish setting up for the3 largest neighbourhood party in Canada.
The clouds parted and the sun came out just in time for the start of the children’s activities. People came in droves. It wasn’t long before the children’s area was filled to capacity. As always, the petting zoo was a hit. The hay rides and bouncy castles also held their own. Everyone seems to be having a great time!
Stage activities began around 2:30 with a mixture of music and dance. Catalyst got the crowds ramped up just before the Opening Ceremonies at 6 PM.
After a short break for the opening ceremonies, it was back into the music. Daylin Jorgensen and Jasmine Singh dazzled the crowds with their vocals. Freeburn never disappoints as they returned for the third year.
REDD NATION brought their unique mix of hip hop and rap to the stage. This aboriginal group has won multiple music awards. Their performance seems to be well received by the crowd.
Headliners this year were Captain Tractor. Their celtic rock sound got the crowds clapping and stomping their feet into the evening. I’m not sure who had more fun, the crowd or the band. Everyone was smiling.
And the fireworks, let’s not forget them. At 11 PM the best fireworks show in Edmonton happened right there in Mill Woods Park. Fireworks lit up the sky for almost 15 minutes. Yes, the best way to cap off a perfect night of entertainment for over 50,000 spectators.
This event wouldn’t be possible without all the hard work by the Planning Committee, the volunteers that worked to put on the event, and our sponsors. It takes about 180 volunteers to pull this event off but it is our sponsors that help us keep this event going. Without their sponsorship, Mill Woods wouldn’t have this fantastic celebration. It is their sponsorship that pays for all the activities, fireworks, stage and sound system. Please support our sponsors so they can support us again next year.
